Marriage is a Sacrament because it bears the image of the love of Christ for the Church. In the Marriage Sacrament, a husband and wife are called to love each other in the model of the self-giving love of Jesus. This love is the primary sign of marriage. In this love, God is experienced in and through your spouse, each for the other. God is made visible and known in the self-giving love of one’s spouse. The fruit of the love finds its greatest expression in the creation of children who become the beneficiaries of the love of husband and wife. Marriage calls for a total sharing of life with your spouse. It holds the security of permanence, fidelity, and the grace of God for unity and strength.
Husbands love your wives, as Christ loves the Church and gave himself up for her (Ephesians 5:25)
