Why do we light candles in church?

In a Catholic church, lighting a candle symbolizes prayer, reverence, and a physical representation of one’s intentions or faithCandles are lit for various reasons, including to pray for others, show devotion to saints, express gratitude for answered prayers, or as a reminder of Christ as the “Light of the World”. The act is considered a sacramental, a tangible way to show a persistent prayer that continues to burn even after the person has left.

How to light a candle
  • Find a candle rack:

Many churches have racks of votive candles, often in front of statues or altars.

  • Make a donation:

A small offering is customary and helps cover the costs of the candles.

  • Make your intention:

You can say a short prayer or hold your intention in your heart as you light the wick.

  • Leave the flame burning:
The candle will continue to burn, symbolizing a prayer that is always present.
